VoIP Fraud and Spam Controls Every Call Center Should Have
Practical controls against toll fraud, compromised credentials and spam-flagged caller IDs — on your side of the trunk.
Toll fraud basics
Toll fraud happens when someone gains access to your PBX, dialer or SIP credentials and pushes calls — often to expensive international or premium destinations — at your cost. It is usually discovered when a balance drains overnight.
Controls on your side
- Prefer IP authentication from a fixed server address where possible; if you use SIP credentials, use long random passwords and never reuse them.
- Keep the SIP port off the public internet unless required, and allow-list known source addresses on your firewall.
- Install fail2ban or equivalent on Asterisk/VICIdial servers and keep them patched.
- Restrict dial plans to the destinations you actually call; block premium-rate ranges.
- Monitor call volume by destination daily and alert on unusual spikes.
Caller ID reputation
- Present caller IDs you own or are authorised to use, consistently.
- Honour opt-out requests quickly and keep suppression lists current — complaint volume drives spam labelling.
- Avoid rapid rotation of large pools of numbers to evade labelling; it is frequently filtered and may be unlawful.
At CallCenterBoost
Services are prepaid, which limits exposure to the funded balance. Approved source IPs and SIP credentials are managed per service; report suspected compromise immediately through a VoIP Route or Account / Login ticket so credentials can be rotated.
