SIP Username/Password Authentication

How credential-based SIP authentication works and when to choose it over IP authentication.

How it works

Your dialer registers to the SIP trunk using a username and password, the same way a softphone registers to an extension. The trunk accepts calls from any IP address as long as the correct credentials are presented on each request.

When to choose it

Credential-based authentication suits deployments where the originating IP address changes — dynamic IPs, multiple sending locations, or agents dialing from varied network paths — since the trunk does not need to be reconfigured when your IP changes.

Security notes

Keep SIP credentials as confidential as a login password. Do not share them over insecure channels, and rotate them if you suspect they have been exposed. Unusual call patterns on a credential-authenticated trunk are a common sign of compromised credentials.
