IP-Authenticated SIP Trunks

How IP-based trunk authentication works and when it is the better fit.

How it works

Instead of a username and password, the trunk is configured to accept traffic only from a specific, fixed source IP address (or small set of addresses). No credentials are exchanged on each call.

When to choose it

IP authentication suits a stable deployment with a fixed public IP — a dedicated VICIdial server or data center presence — where the source address does not change. It removes the risk of leaked SIP credentials entirely, since there is nothing to leak.

What we need from you

The exact static IP address (or addresses) your dialer will originate traffic from. If that address changes, the trunk must be updated before calls will connect again — open a ticket in the VoIP Route category if your IP changes.

Choosing between the two

If your originating IP is fixed, IP authentication is simpler and slightly more secure. If it varies, credential-based authentication is the only workable option. Route-test requests let you specify "Either" if you are not sure yet.
